Election night, November 2024. Before a single swing state had been called, Polymarket had Donald Trump at 67%. CNN's decision desk was hedging. The polling averages had the race near-even. Somewhere between those two signals, the forecaster's caution and the market's conviction, was the question everyone would be asking by morning: are prediction markets better than polls?

The answer isn't simple. But prediction markets vs polls is no longer an academic debate. It now shapes how campaigns are run, how journalists cover elections, and how millions of people make sense of what's coming next.

Research using data from the Iowa Electronic Markets found that prediction markets outperformed 74% of contemporaneous polls at forecasting final election vote share, particularly in the months before Election Day. That financial pressure tends to produce more honest signals, because accuracy isn't just virtuous. It's profitable, and inaccuracy has a direct cost.

But the question of who is actually trading matters more than most coverage acknowledges. Think about what it means to put real money on a political outcome. It was confidently, expensively wrong.

The demographic gap is real. Prediction market participants skew heavily toward crypto-native, financially sophisticated users, disproportionately young, male, and internationally concentrated. That's not the general population, and it's not the voting population. The "wisdom of crowds" argument holds when the crowd is diverse and broadly informed. When the crowd is a specific demographic with its own biases, the prices reflect those biases.

The insider problem has no clean answer yet. In early 2025, an anonymous trader placed approximately $30,000 in bets on Polymarket predicting that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro would be removed from power, hours before a U.S. operation resulting in his capture. The profit, estimated by blockchain analysts tracking on-chain settlement data, was over $400,000. Under current law, this is not insider trading in the legal sense: prediction market contracts are regulated as derivatives, not securities, and fall under the jurisdiction of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), not the SEC rules that govern insider trading in stocks. The Honest Answer to "Are Prediction Markets Better Than Polls?"

Here's the verdict: prediction markets are better at one specific job. Forecasting the probability of an outcome. They're worse at every other job polling does. They can't tell you why opinion is moving, who is shifting, or what would have to change for the result to flip. They produce a live probability. Polls produce a diagnosis. Both are useful. Neither is complete.
